The Best Resort In Wayanad

Sometimes the best holiday is the one where nothing is planned and everything just falls into place.
There’s a particular kind of tiredness that no amount of sleep fixes. The kind that comes from too many notifications, too many open tabs, and too many days where you barely looked out a window. That’s exactly where I was before I found Amber Woods.
I’d been scrolling through stay options in Wayanad the way you do when you’re desperate clicking through endless galleries of pools and rooms, all of which look identical. Then I came across Amber Woods. One villa. One family or couple at a time. A private pool surrounded by trees. No other guests. I booked it within ten minutes.
The drive to Padinjarathara is genuinely beautiful. Once you leave the main road, the landscape shifts coffee plantations close in, the air noticeably cools, and the hills start doing that thing where they disappear into the mist. By the time you turn off toward the property, you’ve already started to decompress.
Amber Woods sits tucked into the forest near Banasura Sagar Dam India’s largest earthen dam which means you’re surrounded by nature but never far from something worth seeing. The caretaker was waiting when we arrived. No check-in counter, no queue. Just a warm welcome and the keys to the whole place.
The two-bedroom villa is generous without being showy. Both bedrooms are comfortable good mattresses, proper light, AC that actually works and the shared living and dining space is exactly the kind of room you want to spend lazy mornings in. But what you’ll gravitate to, again and again, is the sitout facing the forest.
You sit there with your morning coffee and the trees just do their thing. Birds you’d never hear in a city. Light filtering through leaves. Occasionally, a cool wind that makes you pull your knees up and stay a little longer than you planned. It’s not fancy. It’s just really, really nice.
I’ll be honest I didn’t expect to spend as much time in the pool as I did. But when it’s entirely yours, something changes. There’s no awkwardness about which sun lounger to pick, no timing your swim around other guests, no polite nodding at strangers. You just get in when you feel like it and get out when you don’t.
The pool is surrounded by forest on all sides. Swimming in the evening, with the sky going dark and the trees settling into silhouettes, is one of those experiences that doesn’t photograph particularly well but stays with you for a long time afterward.
Banasura Sagar Dam is about ten minutes away and worth the trip especially early in the morning before any heat sets in. The views are broad and calm, the kind you stand in front of and forget to take photos of because you’re actually just looking.
From Amber Woods you can also organise jeep trekking, plantation visits, and guided tours to places like Soochipara Falls or Chembra Peak. The team will help arrange it. But genuinely, some of the best hours we had were ones where we did absolutely nothing. Read books. Swam slowly. Ate breakfast without looking at the time.
